Keep the Republic

A blog dedicated to expressing faith in God, hope in America, and a conviction to preserve the principles on which the nation was founded. Benjamin Franklin, after the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, was asked by a concerned citizen of Philadelphia what type of government had been created after four months of closed-door meetings by the delegates; he responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."

The dismay . . .

in Tim Russert's voice was almost palpable when, after NBC called Ohio for Bush, he was forced to concede, "It is difficult to see how John Kerry becomes president of the United States." Fox made the first call on Ohio, when Michael Barone indicated that there were not enough uncounted votes from Democratic areas in the state to offset the combination of Bush's lead and the uncounted Republican votes.

CNN, Dan Rather and Peter Jennings are bravely holding out, even though Rather seemed surprised when he was just told that the Bush team was preparing a motorcade to the victory celebration.

CBS only called the Kentucky Senate race for Bunning at 1:08 a.m? Unbelievable.

David Gergen is partially crediting the marriage amendments on the ballots in eleven states for the Bush victory. That's probably a bit of an overstatement by Gergen; however, some exit polls showed that moral values were the number one issue with voters this year. It may be an overstatement, but it is not an insignificant point.
