Keep the Republic

A blog dedicated to expressing faith in God, hope in America, and a conviction to preserve the principles on which the nation was founded. Benjamin Franklin, after the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, was asked by a concerned citizen of Philadelphia what type of government had been created after four months of closed-door meetings by the delegates; he responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."

Report on Kerry's discharge

Here is the report from Thaomas Lipscomb on Kerry's questionable discharge from the Navy. Make of it what you will. I think that in its current form, it lacks sufficient evidentiary support to justify claiming that Kerry was not honorably discharged. Unfortunately, that evidence could only be supplied if the senator signed a SF-180 authorizing the full release of all of his military records, which he for some reason has refused to do, even though he placed his military service front and center in his campaign.

I am not saying that there is nothing to this story. The holes in the record are curious. But at this point there is nothing on which to base a firm accusation, in my view.

From the journalist's perspective, it should have been news five months ago. You'd think with all the time and effort CBS spent conducting a body cavity search to uncover Bush's National Guard record, they could have spent a little bit of time examining the missing chunks of time between Kerry's separation from service and his discharge, especially since Kerry made his service such a crucial element of his candidacy. But if they had pursued the Kerry story, they might not have had time to forge the Bush Texas Air National Guard documents.
